Course Objectives:
Participants will:
1. Describe the development of the
ANCC
Magnet initiative, its main provisions and its importance to hospitals.
2. Describe knowledge-based information needs of nurses in clinical and
academic settings, with an emphasis on evidence based nursing and the
ANCC Magnet initiative.
3.
Identify collaborative education and service strategies to improve
knowledge-based information services for nurses in clinical and academic
settings.
4. Suggest some search terms in Medline, CINAHL, and Google which could
be used to identify material about Magnet or the Magnet principles.
5. Identify the librarian's role in evaluation of point-of-care products and
their usefulness in the librarian's particular setting.

o Topic Two: Magnet components ("Forces of
Magnetism"): Overview and Discussion of Component 1 (Transformational
Leadership) and Component 2 (Structural Empowerment)
Jan. 28 – Feb.3, 2010
o Topic Three: Discuss and explore Model Component
3 (Exemplary Professional Practice), Component 4 (New Knowledge, Innovations,
and Improvements) and Component 5 (Empirical Outcomes) Note: the readings are extensive for
this week so prepare to spend additional time on them

o Topic Four: Evidence Based Nursing and Nursing Research & Its Importance in
Hospitals and Magnet. Librarians’ responses to the Magnet initiative
Feb. 11 – 17, 2010
o Topic Five: Evaluating point-of-care resources for interdisciplinary practice: The
Librarian's Role Note: expect to
examine at least two point-of-care products and discuss their merits. Passwords will be provided.
Feb. 18 – 24, 2010
o Topic Six: Reflect on collaborative education
and service strategies for the library to offer to improve knowledge-based
information services to nurses in clinical and academic settings

each topic, course resources include PowerPoint 97-2003 slides, Word forms, one
or two readings and discussion, and shared slides for teaching these
concepts. We've also included a lot of supplemental material for
you to read/download now or at any time during the course or for the next 90
days. Your access to the site will continue until then. Once a
Topic has been activated it will continue to be available to you for that entire period so feel free to come back later and review resources or discussion, ask
