Expert Searching for Evidence Based Nursing (EBN)

 

Course objectives:

 

1.      Describe continuum of knowledge-based information needs in the nursing profession.

2.      Develop tailored objectives and plan for teaching search skills to a selected nursing audience.

3.      Plan strategies for expert searches in CINAHL, MEDLINE, and other databases to answer client questions.

·         Compare and contrast MEDLINE, CINAHL and Mosby’s Index/EMCARE indexing practices.

·         Select relevant bibliographic and Internet databases for nursing questions.

·         Describe coverage of nursing terminology in database thesauri, including basic understanding of nursing classification systems.

 

Schedule:

The objective(s) listed with each topic are introduced that week, and expanded on in the following weeks. 

 

Topic One: Feb. 23 – March 1, 2010

Evidence Based Nursing Practice (EBNP) and Librarians

Get to know Moodle and each other. Discuss nursing information needs, search services, the reference interview and teaching nurses in your setting.  Begin sharing related resources: articles, books, tutorials, slides and handouts.

Objectives:

1.      Describe continuum of knowledge-based information needs in the nursing profession.

Topic Two: March 2 – 8, 2010

Analyzing and searching nursing questions

Review databases and Internet resources suggested in Essential Nursing References (ENR).  Learn about subject indexing practices for CINAHL, MEDLINE, Mosby's Index, and Nursing@Ovid.  Index an article.  Analyze and search at least one nursing question.

3.      Plan strategies for expert searches in CINAHL, MEDLINE, and other databases to answer client questions.

·         Select relevant bibliographic and Internet databases for nursing questions.

·         Compare and contrast MEDLINE, CINAHL and Mosby’s Index/EMCARE indexing practices.

 
Topic Three: March 9 – 15, 2010

Magnets in a Haystack: Filtering Subject Search Results

Discuss limits, subsets and other features of CINAHL, MEDLINE, Mosby’s Index and Nursing@Ovid.  Discuss role of nursing Point of Care (PoC) products in the ACE Star Model for EBP and 6Gs evidence pyramid. Search using limits and available PoC products.

Topic Four: March 16- 22, 2010

Nursespeak:  Nursing’s unique vocabularies

Learn about nursing models & theories and nursing classification systems.  Plan, execute and edit search to support nursing best practice: guideline, policy/procedure, protocol or standard.

Objective added to 3:

·         Describe coverage of nursing terminology in database thesauri, including basic understanding of nursing classification systems.

Topic Five: March 23 – 29, 2010

WWW and beyond: searching and teaching for EBNP

Discuss relative merits of key resources for nursing questions (slide summary with discussion forum).  Choose one EBNP competency and develop simple teaching plan.  Complete an "expert search" comparing results from additional databases you select.  This may be a collaborative search with a nurse client.

For each topic, course resources include PowerPoint 97-2003 slides, Word forms, one or two readings and discussion, and shared slides for teaching these concepts.   We've also included a lot of supplemental material for you to read/download now or at any time during the course or for the next 90 days.  Your access to the site will continue until then.  Once a Topic has been activated it will continue to be available to you for that entire period so feel free to come back later and review resources or discussion, ask us questions, etc.
